A whole new ballgame
Modified By Shocklance on 10/31/2007 2:11:37 PM)

I was one of the lucky ones.  I knew what was coming.  At least I thought I did.  My security clearance came in handy in that the blow that we weren't alone in the universe was softened a bit for me.  I had time to take it in.  Not like those poor saps that got loaded into trucks on our final day on Earth.  I had been a sniper working somewhat freelance for the government.  Jungle territory was my specialty.  I did plenty of odd jobs.  Assassinations, surveillance, pretty much anything that requires not getting caught and plausible deniability.  There were a few close calls but I felt like I could handle anything as long as my exit was clear.  After the invasion nothing was clear anymore.  Enemies became fellow humans.  Aliens became non-fiction.  Magic became something we were altered for.  Peace became something long forgotten.  Home was gone.

My confidence was soon shaken.  I set up a location on a hillside near Alia Das, my first assignment.  I used the local vegetation like I always did to hide my visual profile.  All by-the-numbers.  I didn't know the Bane could smell you from 30 yards or more.  I saw some big ugly thing in the valley below and took my shot when its masters had gone from my view.  The bullet never hit its target.  The thing was impervious to standard rounds.  The intel hadn't told us that yet.  Next thing I know the 3 Bane that had been in the valley were right behind me sniffing the air like dogs.  The thrum of their teleportation device was all the warning I had.  I was silent as I turned toward them but the more they snuffled the air, the more their stance came to point right at me.  I took aim and shot one in the eye.  He had no such immunity as my last target and dropped like all those uglies should.  With no time to chamber the next round I Kicked the second one back as I pulled my pistol and unloaded as many rounds as I could into the third.  I had just enough surprise on my side to take him down before he could fire.  With nothing left in my gun I had to beat the other one with the butt of it.  He threw me off before I could hit him twice and I landed on my back in the foliage.  He rolled over smoothly picking up his energy weapon, aimed at me and fired.

A loud snap and hiss could be heard like a lightning strike back on Earth.  I felt hot dirt pelt up next to my face as I watched the Bane troop's head twitch to the side as he fired.  His shot had barely missed my face while someone else's found its home in his head.  His leg buckled under him and he slumped to the side.

I was bleeding but Ok and I looked around as I got up to find who had saved me.  Some red headed chick with a gun that made me wish for an upgrade.  The corner of her mouth turned up and she told me to get back to camp to get more training before I head out on my own again.  Imagine that, some girl treating me like a greenie.  It's a whole new ballgame all right.

Back to Basic - Part one
Modified By Shocklance on 10/31/2007 2:10:37 PM)

I was directed by my C.O. to some hole in the middle of nowhere that was considered to be a training camp. After a boring flight toward the base we were diverted down to a nearby clearing just short of the camp. They told us the training camp had been overrun by the krusties. When they asked which of us had ever fired a gun before I figured that made this round 2 for me. I raised my hand. I was led out to some crates and handed a pistol. I liked the feel of it. It had a nice kick when they had me fire a few rounds down range at some scrap metal. "This is all we have for you for now," was all they would tell me. I was given a few tips about crouching behind cover and when my eyes didn't glaze over they figured I could handle some stats on my new armor and gun. Seems this motor assist stuff kept you pretty spry during combat. I would put that to the test. After answering some questions on my background, I was handed a few detonators for my pack and briefed on the situation.

The greenies who never handled firearms before were to get a quick ride back and I was to clear a path through the debris for the real troops who would replace them. Then I was to assist them with the assault on the base, planting charges on the defense screens and auto turret emplacements to get them through. After that I was to follow the command of the highest ranking person I saw. If all went right, I would stay for training as previously planned.

Under the watchful eye of my C.O., I ran down to the scrap pile blocking the road ahead. I recognized what it was once I got close enough. It was another drop ship like the one that had just dropped me here. I stuck to the job at hand rather than let my mind drift over this information and reached into my pack. The detonator had an electromagnetic placement switch that acted to arm it as well. The big red 5 that blinked onto its face took me a little off guard. The 4 that followed it got my feet moving! I can see why command decided to start recruits off with motor assist armor. 3 seconds later, I got just far enough from the blast radius to keep from losing touch with the ground as the concussion hit me in the back. I stumbled and caught myself then turned to look back. The road was more like a big crater but clear enough for travel now. Pulling my pistol out and traveling down the path brought me to a small stream with a bridge. Before I could cross I heard the eerie whine of an enemy transport ship so I took cover.

This really was round 2. There was no way I was waiting for them to pick up my scent this time. After the blur of their beam-in faded I took aim and nailed one dead in the back. That pistol had a nice kick on his end too. Unloading the clip on the rest of them did plenty of damage. Those little eyes of theirs didn't seem to help them much for picking me out from cover at this distance. Most of their shots missed entirely. One managed a lucky shot that rattled my chest armor but I barely felt the impact. My next clip was all it took to return the favor. The Thrax dropped his gun and stood there gushing whatever goo it is that runs through him normally. Rather than waste more ammo I strode up to him and gave him a sharp kick. The motor assist armor again surprised me when it sent my foot clears through him spraying me with gore from the remaining two halves. The stench was unbelievable!

I wiped off what I could see from my outfit but I knew this could help me later. If they were scent based creatures, smelling a bit more like them could come in handy in the next hour or so. Not that it was a pleasant idea for me. I set out again...
